About California Travel Insider
California is one of the most diverse and beautiful places in the world — which can make it hard to know where to start when planning a trip.
From dramatic coastlines and mountain lakes to vibrant cities, charming small towns, and vast desert landscapes, there’s truly something here for everyone. You just need to know where to look.
The best places aren’t always the most popular ones. They’re often the quiet beaches locals return to again and again, the scenic viewpoints you discover by accident, the hidden gems tucked between well-known destinations, and the restaurants you stumble upon after a long day exploring.
California Travel Insider was created to help travelers experience the state like locals do — discovering beautiful destinations, memorable experiences, and the places that truly make California special.

Meet Blair Nicole, Founder & Editor-in-Chief
Hi, I’m Blair Nicole, the founder and editor-in-chief of California Travel Insider.
Long before I ever lived here, California captured my heart and my imagination. As a child, I dreamed of moving here — decades later, that dream became reality. Today I live in San Diego with my husband and our son, and I’m constantly reminded how lucky we are to call this place home.
Travel has always been a big part of my life. Years before it was a common thing to do, I worked remotely as a digital nomad, exploring new places around the world with my son — who was a toddler at the time — all while working from my laptop. What an experience! It tested my patience at times, but it also deepened my love for discovering cultures, landscapes, and the kinds of moments that make travel so meaningful.
California Travel Insider grew naturally out of that passion. I love finding places that feel special and sharing them so others can experience the same sense of wonder and adventure.
When I’m not writing or traveling, I’m also a mental health researcher, PhD candidate in Psychology, and self-compassion coach for women. My work focuses on helping people reconnect with themselves and find more joy and meaning in their lives. I regularly host guided meditations and wellness events in California and beyond.
My background in psychology and mental health also shapes how I approach travel. Some of the most meaningful trips aren’t just about checking off famous attractions — they’re about slowing down, being more present, and connecting more deeply with the world around you.
When I’m not exploring new destinations, you’ll usually find me reading, practicing yoga and meditation, or planning our next family adventure.
Some of my favorite experiences in California so far include:
- Kayaking through the La Jolla Sea Caves
- Skydiving over the San Diego coastline
- Riding the gondola in Lake Tahoe (such a breathtaking view!)
California is a place that continues to surprise and inspire me, and I’m excited to share the places and experiences that make this state so special. Thanks for being here!
